Produce and Pesticides…
Organic vs. Non organic that is the question. We all want to eat well but sometimes it’s the cost that determines what we purchase at the market. Again this is not an all or nothing situation and you can have your cake and eat it to. Being educated about what you are purchasing is key and not being embarrassed to ask questions about where your food is coming from. It’s your right to know!
So what about organics, the definition is… Foods that are produced using methods of organic farming, that do not involve modern synthetic inputs such as synthetic pesticides and chemical fertilizers. To me it’s not always possible to buy everything organic so I use a list called the Dirty Dozen list, which are those fruits or veggies that are most exposed to pesticides. It’s a really handy list. I still use it today if I’m in a market that doesn’t carry organics. For non organic items if possible I remove the skin before using otherwise wash them really well with water.
